The Detroit Lions landing eight nationally televised games, along with a home fixture in Munich, could also quietly work in their favor. Beyond the spotlight, the 2026 schedule gives Detroit added exposure and a favorable preparation window.
After an unfortunate bottom-of-the-division finish despite having a winning record (9-8) last year, the Lions have a chance to reach their 2024 heights again. Here are four reasons why:
A Manageable On-the-Road Schedule
The Lions will still face a few major tests away from Ford Field in 2026. They have road trips against the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Miami Dolphins, standing out as the toughest matchups on paper.

Still, YardBaker reports that Detroit enters most of its road games as a favorite. This is even with a tricky finish that sends them on back-to-back road trips against the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. The final two games come after hosting the New York Giants in Week 15 on December 28.
A Confident Home Schedule
Detroit also has a real opportunity to dominate at Ford Field this season. Their first two division matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings arrive shortly after the early Week 6 bye.
The home slate overall features several favorable matchups. Even the clash against the New England Patriots shifts overseas to Germany, leaving Detroit fans with plenty of chances to celebrate victories at home throughout the year.
An Early Game Against A Good Team Under a New HC
After nearly a decade in charge, Sean McDermott left the Buffalo Bills with an impressive 98-50 record. But with the longtime leader now gone, Buffalo could face early growing pains under new head coach Joe Brady.
The early timing of the Detroit Lions’ Week 2 clash with the Buffalo Bills could quietly work in Detroit’s favor.
With teams often needing a few weeks to fully settle into a new season, Buffalo may still be adjusting to Brady and new roster dynamics. This would give the Lions a chance to capitalize before the Bills fully hit their stride.
A Good Looking Opening Stretch
The opening stretch of the Detroit Lions’ 2026 schedule could not line up much better on paper.
Across the first five weeks, only the Buffalo Bills come in after winning a playoff game last season. Detroit also opens against a rebuilding New Orleans Saints squad and a familiar New York Jets team led by former Lions coach Aaron Glenn.
Add in the struggling Arizona Cardinals, and Detroit has a real opportunity to build momentum early.
With the schedule now officially out, the Detroit Lions appear to have a real pathway ahead. Playoff football could come back to Detroit thanks to favorable timing, manageable stretches, and several key games.
