The Detroit Lions have bolstered their defensive line. Former Vikings edge rusher D.J. Wonnum signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the team. He quickly took to social media to share his reaction to the move.

Former Vikings Edge D.J. Wonnum signed a one-year contract at $6 million with the Detroit Lions. Wonnum reacted after the move and shared the news with his fans as he stepped into a new role on Detroit’s defensive front. 

He shared Adam Schefter’s Instagram post on his story, adding two high-five emojis to mark the move. His simple reaction still showed clear excitement for his next chapter in Detroit.

Wonnum was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft as the 117th overall pick. 

He played for four seasons with the Vikings under a $4 million rookie contract. Later, he joined the Carolina Panthers for two seasons at $12.5 million as a free agent. Now he heads to the Detroit Lions after his two-year stint with the Carolina Panthers. 

During his career, he played in 86 games, scoring 250 total tackles, with 30 sacks, 15 PD, and 1 interception. Last season, despite his quad injury, he managed 42 tackles and 3 sacks.

What D.J. Wonnum Brings to the Detroit Lions Defensive Front

Wonnum’s addition gives the Lions a needed rotational edge presence opposite Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions needed a new defensive presence following the departure of veteran players.

In a controlled rotation, he can attack one-on-one matchups, set the edge in early downs, and contribute to a more balanced front that supports both pass rush and run containment.

At the same time, it allows the Lions to use their draft picks to bolster the offensive line. That was the big dilemma Brad Homes and his team faced, but with this signing, the team might just have a solution.
