Former Celtics Governor among final contenders to buy the Seattle Seahawks

Former Boston Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck has emerged as one of the final contenders to purchase the Seattle Seahawks. The franchise is being sold by the Paul G. Allen Estate, whose representative had "no news to share about the sale process."

However, according to a report by Front Office Sports, a bidding group featuring Grousbeck and current Celtics minority owner Aditya Mittal is reportedly one of two remaining candidates in the franchise's sale process.

Grousbeck and Mittal's group is reportedly competing against another group led by San Francisco 49ers minority investor Vinod Khosla. One source told Front Office Sports the process is now down to those two groups.

Front Office Sports also reported on July 9 that Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and Premier League Chelsea FC co-owner Todd Boehly are no longer in contention. But reports suggest that a late bidder could still emerge before a deal is finalized.

Industry estimates value the Seahawks at $8 billion to $10 billion. If the sale reaches the higher end of that range, it would top the $6.05 billion sale of the Washington Commanders.

Forbes estimates Khosla Ventures founder Vinod Khosla's net worth at about $14 billion. Wyc Grousbeck's personal wealth is unknown, but Forbes values the Grousbeck family at roughly $2.2 billion.

Mittal's individual net worth is also unclear, but Forbes estimates the Mittal family's wealth at more than $17 billion. Mittal serves as CEO of steel giant ArcelorMittal.

Mittal invested $1 billion in Bill Chisholm's record $6.1 billion purchase of the Boston Celtics last year.

A source previously told Front Office Sports that he might become the franchise's largest stakeholder. He could eventually serve as the Celtics' alternate governor.

If Khosla's group ultimately succeeds, the family would first need to sell its minority stake in the 49ers because of NFL ownership rules.

The ownership race also carries one intriguing mystery.

Mystery Seahawks legend reportedly involved in one finalist group

According to a July 10 report by Field Gulls, one of the two remaining ownership groups reportedly includes a former Seahawks player.

While the report did not identify either the player or which bid they have joined, the involvement of a franchise alumnus could appeal to fans hoping for continuity under new ownership.

Field Gulls also noted that the latest update matches the timeline NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show in May.

Rapoport said the Seahawks could have a new owner by August. He also suggested the eventual sale might approach the $10 billion mark.

Whoever completes the purchase will inherit one of the NFL's most stable organizations.

For now, Seattle's ownership question remains unresolved. With the regular season approaching, the focus is on who is going to own the franchise.
