Ex-Lions Star Announces Retirement at 28 After Two Straight Bad Seasons

Detroit Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs (23) celebrates with cornerback Cameron Sutton (1) after intercepting a pass against the Green Bay Packers during their football game Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin.

Three seasons of legacy have come to an end for the Detroit Lions' UDFA cornerback. At age 28, Jerry Jacobs has announced that he will be hanging up his cleats.

The former Motor City CB announced his retirement on Tuesday via an Instagram post where he thanked the coaches and teammates and concluded it with a farewell to the beautiful game, per Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News.

”First off, I want to thank God because without him I wouldn’t be here." Jacobs wrote on his Instagram post."I also wanna thank my mother for always being by my side through whatever and always pushing me to go harder to my sisters…”

After going undrafted out of the University of Arkansas, the Lions signed him to a three-year contract (2021-2023) after signing him for the NFL training camps.

In 2021, Jacobs suffered an ACL tear while playing against the Denver Broncos. Due to his injuries, he missed five games in 2022.

After suffering an ACL injury during his rookie season, Jerry Jacobs saw a reduced role in Year 2, starting just eight games while recording the lone sack of his career in 2022.

In his final season, he appeared in a career-high 15 games, but production remained limited as he finished with no sacks, two tackles for loss, and 55 total tackles.

During his time with the Lions, he appeared in 40 games where he recorded 116 solo tackles, while landing a hit on the quarterback three times.

After his contract expired, Jacobs was with the Los Angeles Rams (training camp), the New England Patriots (workouts), and the Houston Texans (workouts).

Following his passion for football, he joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). And at the end, he ended his professional football career.

Injury Woes Ended Rams Stint for Jerry Jacobs

After completing his time with the Lions, Jacobs was signed by the Los Angeles Rams for the 2024 NFL training camp but was later waived with an injury settlement.

For an undisclosed injury, he was released by the Rams out of the training camp and never made it to the roster.

He was signed by the Rams to overcome their cornerback crisis. The Rams lost CB Derion Kendrick (torn ACL) and Darious Williams (hamstring), his presence provided secondary depth on the Rams roster.

Unfortunately, with injury woes, another NFL appearance never materialized for the cornerback who is now stepping away from the game.
