A former Detroit Lions cornerback is hanging up his football cleats for good. Fans are shocked to learn that Darius Slay's NFL career has come to an end.  

Six-time Pro Bowler and veteran cornerback Darius Demetrius Slay Jr. announced his retirement on Monday via an Instagram post. He thanked his fans and was grateful for his career.

“Dear Football, I wanna thank you for all you’ve done for me... Football was my peace, my joy, everything. This game put me in a position to help take care of my family and loved ones, and I’m forever grateful.”

The 35-year-old cornerback was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2013 as the 36th overall pick (second round). 

During his career, Darius Slay has played 187 games, recording 623 total tackles and 1 sack. He successfully defended 164 passes with 28 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. 

Slay earned his first Pro Bowl title with the Lions in 2017, and later reached his peak with the Philadelphia Eagles, earning three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2021 to 2023

He even shared a rivalry against arch rivals the Dallas Cowboys. In a 2021 episode of the All Things Covered podcast, Slay confessed that he decided never to play for the Cowboys again.

"I heard Dallas had wanted to trade for me,” Slay said. “I said, ‘nah I ain’t going there.’ I wasn’t going to Dallas. I couldn’t stand them. They cheated us."

Darius Slay Jr. has earned the title “Big Play Slay” for his exceptional 28 interceptions. He became a true shutdown corner for the Detroit Lions, regularly matching up with top receivers and allowing the defense to play more aggressive coverage schemes. 

Darius Slay's NFL Peers Offer Respect to His Legacy

Some of Slay's rivals from the Cowboys reacted to Slay's retirement announcement with awe and respect.

Former Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs wasn't big on words when he wrote, "The biggest!!!!" But it showed the impact Slay has had on the game. Another former Cowboys player, Micah Parsons, bestowed the title of "legend" upon him.

"We gonna miss you legend !!"

However, the best compliment came from rival and Detroit-born Sauce Gardner, who openly admitted Slay's influence in the Lion's match-winning moments.

"you jus don’t know how many people you gave hope to in detroit.. i’m one of em"

After 13 seasons and multiple accolades, 'Big Slay' deserves this level of praise.
