Detroit Lions tight end Sam Laporta (87) before OTAs at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
Sam LaPorta has returned from back surgery and appears ready for a larger role with the Detroit Lions. He missed eight games last season after undergoing the procedure, but has looked comfortable this time around.
Speaking to reporters, LaPorta said he underwent scans and MRIs before the season. He also sent the results to his surgeon and received an encouraging response about his recovery and career outlook:
“The body feels great. It's held up great. The back is great. I took scans, MRIs before the season — it's great. Sent it to Dr. Watkins, the guy who did my surgery. He responded and said everything looks fantastic, and I should have a long, healthy career to follow.”
The positive feedback from his surgeon has LaPorta looking beyond his return from surgery. He also wants a significant increase in his workload:
“And excited to play more snaps. Ninety-plus percent more.”
Lions tight end could see his role expand significantly
Sam LaPorta has already handled a major workload this season. Through four games, he has played about 87% of Detroit's offensive snaps, with 22 receptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns.
That production has made him one of the Lions' leading receiving options. A larger role could give him more chances to influence the Lions' offense as the season continues.
His comments show he feels ready for that responsibility. With his back holding up well, LaPorta appears eager to take on an even bigger role.
