The Detroit Lions have built one of the NFL's most ferocious offenses around Jared Goff, but with the 2026 season approaching, some concern remains around the Detroit Lions' quarterback and his protection in the absence of veteran Taylor Decker.

While Jared Goff is firmly established as the Lions' starter, the biggest question of 2026 is not just on the O-line. ESPN has pointed to the state of the offensive line and how it could impact Goff's performance.

"Last year's question in this space was "Can Jared Goff overcome all of the changes in Detroit?" and the answer was a resounding "No." If Goff takes to Petzing's offense and coach Dan Campbell doesn't have to take over offensive playcalling again, the Lions could find themselves back at their 2024 heights," Dan Graziano of ESPN wrote on June 9.

Last year, mid-way through the season, Dan Campbell took over the offensive playcalling duties from John Morton, eventually leading the latter to leave the franchise.

Goff played behind an offensive line that quietly ranked 31st in pass block win rate late in the season. The team had faced a major turnover after 2024, following the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Now, as per Graziano, Goff adapting to this new offensive system could be the thing that defines the season for Motor City.

Goff has been at his best, showing his accuracy, timing, and decision-making. But he has scored his lowest QBR since his first season in Detroit, and the Lions finished 9-8 to miss the playoffs last season despite a winning record.

The Lions have gone through major changes over the past two seasons. Drew Petzing, the new offensive coordinator, comes from Arizona, replacing John Morton. The right tackle, Penei Sewell, could also be moved to the left tackle after Decker's exit.

Based on opponents' 2025 records, the Lions are projected to have the NFL's sixth-easiest schedule, which could help the team regain momentum.

Much will depend on how quickly Goff adapts to Petzing's system. If the transition is seamless, Detroit's offense has the potential to rise as one of the league's top teams in 2026.

With stability at QB and high expectations surrounding the team, the veteran is positioned for another big year.
