The Detroit Lions may have found the key to protecting Jared Goff. An early draft report points to a dominant Penn State lineman who could solve a major offensive weakness. This move could be crucial for Goff's MVP chances.

According to Peter Schrager of ESPN, the Motown team could draft offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane from the Penn State Nittany Lions Football as the No. 17 pick to fill the voids in the offensive lineup. 

“I'm not sure there's a more ‘Dan Campbell’ player in this draft than Ioane," the X post by Woodward Sports Network read. "Ioane didn't give up a single sack and was an All-American last season at Penn State. Nice fit on the interior for the Detroit line.”

Ioane stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs about 330 pounds. He is considered one of the safest interior offensive line prospects in his draft class.

After pay-cut talks with Taylor Decker reportedly hit a wall, the Detroit Lions now face a looming question on the edge. Replacing a near-decade-long fixture at left tackle is no small task.

The task is further complicated, especially given Jared Goff's early 2026 MVP chatter. In that context, all eyes quietly turn toward Olaivavega Ioane.

Head coach Dan Campbell could also be able to implement his “duo-pair” approach. He can pair Ioane with Tate Ratledge. This will also provide a rotational opportunity for Ratledge and depth at the position. 

But Detroit isn’t the only team keeping a close eye on him.

Lions Face Competition as Other Teams Show Interest in Olaivavega Ioane

The Detroit Lions aren’t the only team circling Olaivavega Ioane. There’s real competition building, and it comes from teams with clear needs up front.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Philadelphia Eagles are the primary contenders for landing Ioane. 

The Steelers have been identified as a top landing spot, and it makes sense. New head coach Mike McCarthy will be looking to reinforce their interior line to stabilize protection, considering they'd probably be protecting the oldest quarterback in the league (Aaron Rodgers).

With a mid-first-round pick (No. 21), they’re in range to grab a plug-and-play guard who can start early.

Second in the list comes the Baltimore Ravens, holding the No. 14 pick. 

The Ravens' offense leans heavily on physical line play, and adding someone like Ioane fits that identity, especially when you take into account Lamar Jackson's recent injury troubles.

Baltimore needs interior strength to maintain their run-heavy approach while keeping the pocket clean.

Lastly, the Philadelphia Eagles have long-term questions on the interior offensive line, they’ve consistently invested in trench depth. Ioane fits their model, develops, rotates, and eventually takes over.
