The Detroit Lions' new offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, comes in with significant expectations after replacing John Morton. But quarterback Jared Goff is confident he can deliver on those expectations.

“He’s got a great feel for what it’s like to run an offense and run a room and how to balance volume with intentionally attacking a defense,” Goff said Friday, per the Detroit Times. “There’s a lot more to it than just drawing up plays, and he’s got that extra part to it.”

That's massive coming from Goff, as this is the quarterback's fourth offensive coordinator since coming to Detroit in 2021.

Plus, last season, the Lions' season didn't go as expected under Morton. Head coach Dan Campbell had to finally take over the offensive playcalling duties from Morton in Week 10.

Even though they had the 4th-best offense last year, their loss to Minnesota in Week 9 didn't help Morton's case.

So, Goff believes Petzing brings a lot of talent to the table and can take this team to the next level this season.

"It's been a fun synergy between he and I and our whole offensive staff. He's been great. He's done a great job. He's a great listener. He really puts the players first and it's awesome," Goff added.

Petzing was the offensive coordinator and play caller for the Cardinals for the last three seasons. And now he inherits one of the best offenses in the league.

However, the veteran QB also shed some light on what went wrong last season for the Lions.

Goff Gives His Thoughts On The 2025 Season

After making it to the NFC Championship in 2023 and reaching the Divisional level in 2024, the Lions were expected to make a run for the Super Bowl last season.

However, they missed the playoffs entirely. Now, Goff has given his thoughts on the 2025 season.

“Our record may have been middle of the pack, but in our division, we were a fourth-place team,” Goff said on Friday at OTAs.

The Lions finished the 2025 NFL regular season in 4th place in the NFC North division with a 9-8 overall record. A complete contrast to their 2024 and 2023 season, where they came first in the division.

Even their offense that ranked fourth, was not up to the mark compared to their previous season. In 2024, they were first in points scored and second in total yards.
