The Detroit Lions couldn't just stay away from the controversy and spotlight.
The Lions' President Rod Wood defended his decision to reclaim the franchise legend Frank Ragnow's signing bonus because he showed no regret for his actions.
Wood, speaking to Detroit reporters at the NFL Owners Meeting on Tuesday, tersely projected the Lions' stance. The response hit the fanbase, which already felt sensitive about how the organization treated its legends like a gut punch.
"We have to do what's right for our organization. If I worried about optics, you know, it wouldn't do a lot of things. But I'm very comfortable with where we are."

“I don’t really have much MORE to say than I said… we have to do what’s RIGHT for our organization, if I’m worried about OPTICS you wouldn’t do A LOT of things…”

He would not confirm the details, except that Ragnow returned some of the signing bonus ($6 million). The $54 million extension was signed in 2021. Ragnow played through multiple injuries, which included a nonoperable toe, a broken throat, and continuous back and knee issues.
Ragnow retired in June 2025 with two years left on his contract. Although he did attempt a midseason comeback in 2025, he failed his physical due to a Grade 3 hamstring strain. Unfortunately, Ragnow received the same treatment that icons Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson went through.
He was an undisputed legend for the Lions, earning 4 Pro Bowl honors and 3 All-Pro honors. Not only that, in 2020, Ragnow played with a fractured throat, giving everything to the game.
Fans are clearly upset with Wood's statement, implying that the team is making the same mistake with another fan favorite.
Lions Fans Didn't Hold Back On Rod Wood's Statement About Frank Ragnow
Wood's press conference maintained its cold and unapologetic nature, which created a complete online outburst among Lions fans.
The reactions showed the audience's deep personal feelings, which Frank Ragnow had developed over many years.
"I am a lifelong Lion fan. Optics are very, very bad for sure. Kinda disgusted," said one fan.
And rightfully, this is the same front office that chased Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders for bonus money, which resulted in permanent damage to both relationships.
Ragnow is just the latest name on that list.
"Show this clown the door — he's undoing any good vibes this team has put together the last few years," another wrote.
The front office made one tone-deaf decision, which now endangers all the trust that the franchise had spent multiple years to establish.
"Why is this guy still talking? I'm not in the mood for much more nonsense out of this town's sports teams," read another reaction.
The fans directed all their dislike towards the Wood, even wanting him to go far away from their team.
"What a clown, thank god he's retiring," a user commented bluntly.
The Detroit Lions' Chairwoman, Sheila Ford Hamp, created a new team structure from nothing, yet Wood continued his work with the team. Many fans believe his treatment of Ragnow created another tricky situation.
"Gonna be so happy to see this idiot go. Still baffled why Sheila cleaned house but left him in place," said another fan.
These messages from the fans were clear; this wasn't about money but respect. The words of Rod Wood created greater harm to the franchise, which was needed to recover from the previous history of issues.
