Detroit Lions Warned Against 61-TD Draft Prospect As Jared Goff's Backup

In the 2026 free agency, the Detroit Lions signed a veteran in Teddy Bridgewater, as a backup for their quarterback, Jared Goff, who had been a part of the team before.
However, the Lions are still keeping an eye on certain NFL Draft prospects as they look to secure a young successor to Goff.
Meanwhile, Christian Booher from Sports Illustrated has outlined his reasons for why the team should avoid acquiring QB Drew Allar in the process.
“Allar is an intriguing quarterback prospect based on traits, but had just one year of solid production in his time at Penn State.” He wrote.

“Allar could develop into a solid prospect, but the Lions should be wary of some of the accuracy inconsistencies he had as well as the injury concern he has after suffering a season-ending ankle injury last season.”
Allar is expected to be a top-10 QB prospect of this season’s NFL Draft. He recorded 7,402 passing yards, 61 TDs, 13 INTs, plus 736 rushing yards and 12 TDs in college. His performance earned him All-Big Ten honorable mention.
However, the Penn State quarterback suffered a season-ending broken left ankle on October 11, 2025, against Northwestern. That resulted in him playing only 6 games that season.
Of course, that’s not the only factor behind Booher’s stance.
The Lions re-signed Bridgewater for his third stint after his brief 2023 retirement and return a year later.
“Because Bridgewater is back, the Lions can afford to be picky about which quarterback they elect to take and shouldn't feel pressured to reach for a passer who doesn't fit their scheme.” He stated.
He spent 2025 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, posting a 53.3% completion rate, and his veteran, Pro Bowl experience has Booher believing the Lions are comfortable with their QB situation heading into the season.
But if not the Lions, where could Aller fit?
Potential Destinations For NFL Draft Quarterback Drew Aller
Four ESPN draft analysts, Mel Kiper Jr., Matt Miller, Jordan Reid, and Field Yates, came together for a mock draft.
They took turns picking players for each draft pick, and for the Pittsburgh Steelers' No. 85 overall selection, Kiper chose Drew Aller.
“OK, the QB board is finally lining up for the Steelers. Allar is coming off that ankle injury, but he has upside. And he has the size we've seen under center in Pittsburgh; at 6-foot-5 and 228 pounds, his frame reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger.” He said.
“If Aaron Rodgers is back, Allar can learn from a legend. If not, he could potentially compete with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.”
Rogers played for the Steelers last season and scored 24 touchdowns for 3,322 passing yards. Unfortunately, the veteran saw a dreadful end after losing 30-6 to the Texans in the Wild Card round.
So, let’s see how the NFL draft turns out for the Detroit Lions and Drew Aller. What do you think about this development? Let us know in the comments!
