The Detroit Lions are looking at ways to improve their roster and recruit a new offensive player into their ranks. Recent reports suggest they may have their eyes on a massive addition.
Although the Lions have focused on drafting young talent lately, there is still a clear need for an experienced leader on the offensive line.
To that end, the team is rumored to be looking at signing veteran offensive guard Joel Bitonio to provide additional protection for quarterback Jared Goff. As Lions reporter Bob Heyrman wrote,
“This one is a bit complicated, but it would be an absolute home run for the Detroit Lions. The long-time star Cleveland Browns guard is currently an unrestricted free agent and is also mulling over retirement. Bitonio is a two-time first-team All-Pro selection and a seven-time Pro Bowler.”
The Lions need a veteran who can secure the interior gaps, take on heavy defensive tackles, and handle complex stunts to keep the pocket clean for their starting QB, Jared Goff.
Bitonio fits this description perfectly, having earned a reputation as one of the best in the business with seven Pro Bowl selections.

Throughout his twelve-season career with the Cleveland Browns, Bitonio has always been consistent. Since being drafted in 2014, he has started all 178 games. By the end of the 2025 season, he was the longest-tenured player on the Browns roster.
However, the move to Detroit isn't a sure thing yet, as Bitonio is currently weighing whether to keep playing or retire from football.
How Can The Lions Benefit From The Addition Of Joel Bitonio
In the Lions' 2025 season, the team finished with a record of 9-8 and missed the playoffs. It became clear that the offensive line needed a major change. The team struggled to protect Jared Goff and couldn't run the ball effectively, leading to a complete overhaul of the roster.
That is why the team wants to do things differently this time. The Lions' front line looks very different heading into the new season. Penei Sewell has moved over to left tackle, while new players like Blake Miller and Cade Mays are taking over at right tackle and center.
While the team has young talent like Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge, they currently rank 16th in the league and lack experienced depth. Adding a steady, proven player like Bitonio would give the unit the veteran leadership it needs to keep the quarterback safe.
With longtime starters Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow now gone, many experts see Bitonio as the best free agent left to help stabilize the group. Bringing Bitonio on board now would also take some pressure off the team, and help create a cohensive offensive unit.
But for that, we will have to wait for Bitonio to make a decision.
