After losing David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, Dan Campbell is eyeing a new $22 million running back from the Atlanta Falcons. 

According to Scott Kennedy from Sports Illustrated, Tyler Allgeier is a potential fit for the replacement of David Montgomery. 

“Tyler Allgeier is a throwback, between-the-tackles style of runner. Power and balance are his game. He's a good enough receiver out of the backfield,” Kennedy says.

Allgeier performed similarly to Montgomery last season. He had 514 yards behind Montgomery's 716 yards. Both players had 8 touchdowns each. More importantly, Allgeier played in a similar role to Montgomery at Atlanta. He was the backup to Bijan Robinson. With the Lions, he would do so for Jahmyr Gibbs.

But that's not all. Allgeier also had decent receiving numbers. Across 17 games, he managed 14 receptions with 96 yards last season. And across four seasons, he managed 516 receiving yards in total.

In case the running back signs for the Lions, the price tag is clear. According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, "Atlanta’s backup running back will be seeking a contract in the neighborhood of three years, $22 million this offseason."

In a free agent market with the likes of Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III, Kareem Hunt, Isaiah Pacheco and more available, is Alleier's asking price too high for the Lions? In any case, they will have to make a decision quick, with teams like the Seahawks also looking for a backup RB.

Who Are the Other Options?

The likes of Kenneth Walker or Breece Hall will be expensive options for the Lions. More importantly, they'll be looking for the RB1 spot, which is currently occupied by Jahmyr Gibbs at the moment.

That's why while Tyler Allgeier seems like the right choice. But in case he doesn't work out, reporter Jeremy Reisman believes there are a few solid options.

"If Detroit is just looking for a short-term solution while keeping their options open in the draft, there are still plenty of veteran options that could work."

Najee Harris, Isaiah Pacheco, Brian Robinson, and Nick Chubb could be relatively inexpensive options for the Lions.
