The Detroit Lions enter another season with expectations high around Jared Goff, while their second-year wide receiver, Isaac TeSlaa, is facing a battle for opportunities in the offense.

According to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic, TeSlaa is Detroit's breakout candidate for the upcoming season. His path may not be smooth as the Lions' offense is crowded with talent. Instead of being a concern, the depth chart shows just how loaded the offense has become as training camp approaches.

"TeSlaa will have to compete for targets with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs," wrote Pouncy. "His ceiling is somewhat limited, which is ultimately a good problem to have."

Colton Pouncy of The Athletic explained the situation Detroit is facing. Most teams would welcome a young receiver with potential, but the Lions already have multiple Pro-Bowl playmakers. Amon-Ra St.Brown is Jared Goff's reliable target, while Jameson Williams has become a serious threat.

Sam LaPorta is the league's best young TEs, and Jahmyr Gibbs continues to create mismatches as both a runner and receiver. This leaves TeSlaa to compete for touches despite having clear upside. Even with limited opportunities as a rookie, he made his presence felt.

Last season, TeSlaa appeared in all 17 games, catching 16 passes for 239 yards and six touchdowns, ranking second among NFL rookies, while 37.5% of his receptions resulted in touchdowns, according to Tim Twentyman of the Detroit Lions' official website.

HC Dan Campbell has appreciated his development and consistency throughout the offseason. TeSlaa is on a rookie contract, roughly $6 million for four years, and can benefit from changes made around him.

Veteran Kalif Raymond is gone, creating more snaps in the receiver rotation, while Detroit's coaching staff has noticed that TeSlaa has taken some strides since his rookie season.

While Campbell believes the young receiver earned more chances as the season progressed, pointing to the confidence the coaching staff has in him.

The HC Dan Campbell admitted that he wishes the Lions had found a way to include TeSlaa during his rookie season. He explained that TeSlaa's limited opportunities were not because of his performance but the depth of Detroit's offense.

“I almost wish we could have gotten TeSlaa some more touches than he did get (last year),” Campbell said during minicamp practice on Tuesday, as per Tim Twentyman. “But it wasn’t because of him, his growth took off, and he did, he got a little bit better every week, he became a guy – would tell you by the end of the year we had a lot of trust in him.”

Campbell added that the receiver improved throughout the season and became someone the coaching staff trusted during important moments. He also noted that TeSlaa now carries himself like a veteran as he enters his second NFL season.

This showed his understanding of the offense and development as reasons why the Lions expect him to take on a larger role in 2026.
