The Detroit Lions' wide receiver room may not have the biggest group of names, but general manager Brad Holmes sees plenty of value in the different skill sets available to the team.
In a recent press conference, the Lions executive pointed to the established production of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams while expressing satisfaction with Isaac TeSlaa's overall camp.
Despite a couple of drops in the preseason, TeSlaa improved as a route runner and at the line of scrimmage while making a significant impact in the run game.
Holmes also highlighted Tom Kennedy's expanded role on special teams. Tay Martin provided another example of what Detroit wanted, contributing in the run game and on special teams while showing he could win individual matchups.
That variety appears to be a major reason Holmes is comfortable with the group.
Brad Holmes praises the versatility of the wide receivers
Rather than asking every wide receiver to fill the same role, Detroit has players capable of helping in different ways.
Holmes' comments suggest the Lions value that versatility, particularly from players competing for opportunities toward the back end of the room.
Tay Martin's emergence also reflected the work of Detroit's personnel staff, which Holmes credited for continuing to scout the UFL and identify players who could fit the Lions.
The wide receiver ultimately rewarded that process by demonstrating value in multiple phases during camp. That gives Detroit another option who can contribute beyond his work as a traditional pass catcher.
