A longtime Detroit Lions reporter has passed away. The veteran radio personality died on Tuesday following a battle with cancer. His death has sparked widespread mourning across the Michigan sports community.

As reported in the morning hours by the Detroit Times, a longtime Detroit Lions reporter and respected radio personality, Pat Caputo, has passed away at the age of 67, leaving behind decades of storytelling that connected deeply with fans across the Motor City.

"Today, May 7th, we lost Pat to cancer. Pat was surrounded by his family. Thank you for all your support," the family shared a post on X on Thursday, according to Pat Caputo's X account. 

An alumnus of Birmingham Groves High School and Michigan State University, Caputo started his journalism career with the Oakland Press in 1983. 

He started his career by reporting on prep sports before becoming a prominent columnist and professional sports beat reporter. He later became a prominent Detroit radio personality, starting that career in 1996.

Revealed in January, Caputo was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. 

Per Detroit Sports Nation, he described his disease as a death sentence, and the treatment complications with additional diseases have already landed him in intensive care. 

Among the fans, Pat was popularly known as “The Book” for the way he remembers the stats of multiple sports. 

He was the trusted voice for fans when it came to reporting about the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, and Detroit Red Wings.

He has earned numerous accolades, including recognition among the nation’s top sports columnists by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

On May 7, 2026, he took his last breath and left the world with his family by his side. 

Pat is survived by his wife, Kim, and children Patrick, Joe, and Jillian, and two grandchildren. His passing has left an impact on many Motor City fans.

Pat Caputo’s Legacy Draws Emotional Reactions From Detroit Fans

The passing of longtime Detroit sports voice Pat Caputo brought an emotional response from fans who grew up listening to him across radio and print.

“Agree or disagree, loved listening and talking to Pat on the radio. Already miss his show... RIP,” one fan wrote

Many reflected the connection that many listeners had with his daily presence on Detroit airwaves.

“Pat Caputo was a big part of the Detroit sports scene for decades,” another fan posted.

Others remembered the impact he had on the city’s sports culture for decades. 

“In my book, I called you bombastic, and you never let me forget that. RIP, My Friend. The Book sadly is closed.”

The tributes kept pouring in from longtime listeners. 

“Wow RIP, he was one of the best on 97.1 The Ticket,” one comment read.

Some fans chose to focus on what this loss meant for his family as well.

“RIP Pat!! Was a fan for many years. Condolences to the family!!” another added.

Fans also remembered the personality behind the microphone.

“RIP Pat! Your memory will live on, ‘Okay,” one supporter wrote. Another simply added while one fan remained appreciative. “Glad I got to listen to you over the last few years, Book. Rest in heaven.”
