The Detroit Lions just finished their first week of the OTAs. The unpadded practice has a unique name given by head coach Dan Campbell: "pajama party."
But as the Lions focus on bouncing back from last season, Campbell isn't buying into the springtime hype just yet.
"There's been a lot of guys that have done really well for two days in pajamas. And there's some that are learning through it," Campbell said on day 3. "I'm done with the hype of the pajama party in May."
The head coach emphasized that OTAs are for working through the pains and mental aspect of the game.
"I'm just so man it's about the mental, It's about the movement skills like all that other stuff doesn't matter," Campbell added. "We'll find out in training camp who's who this will be the most competition we've had in my opinion."
The last day of practice was open to the reporters, and the players did shell drills, walking and jogging mostly. But the media did see some seven-on-seven action with offense against the defense.
Next, the team has two more weeks of OTAs left. First on June 2-4 and then June 9-11, followed by mandatory minicamp on June 16th and 17th.
But Campbell, he is looking forward to the training camp in late July.
Dan Campbell Provides Key Updates on Players
During the OTAs press conference, Campbell gave updates on stars who were injured last season.
He provided an update that their former first-round pick, Terrion Arnold and a few rookies would likely be held out as a precaution. He also added that DB Kerby Joseph, TE Sam LaPorta and DB Brian Branch are all improving but are not yet practicing.
"That's not the priority," Campbell said at team headquarters in Allen Park before the Lions' third practice of OTAs. "And it's not worth all that anyway."
However, Campbell did mention Penei Sewell and was in high praise of his skills, intangibles and the versatility that he brought to the offensive line.
Sewell is being shifted from right to left tackle, and the head coach believes it “would be like riding a bike” for him.
The early OTA reports show a promising picture of the Lions. The leadership from Dan Campbell continues to set the tone, and this will only increase expectations for the Lions.
