Dan Campbell Shares Honest Assessment of Lions Defense Amid Identity Crisis

Imago

The Detroit Lions' defense has become a major concern after four games, with Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard struggling to get the unit performing consistently. Injuries have made that challenge even harder, particularly in the secondary. Against the Carolina Panthers, those problems proved costly as Detroit surrendered 32 points and 445 yards in a 32-26 loss.

The defensive front has shown flashes, but the secondary has struggled badly. Bryce Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns, while Carolina repeatedly found openings in coverage. Detroit also failed to force a turnover, allowing the Panthers to score on six consecutive possessions.

That has left many wondering what exactly this defense's identity is. Campbell addressed those concerns after the loss, pointing toward the defensive line as the unit's strength while admitting the rest of the defense needs help.

"I do think we have a pretty good front ... I do feel like we hit blocks. I feel like we're creating pressure on the quarterback. We're really driven by those guys. We just need a little help in other areas right now."

Campbell's assessment shows that Detroit sees its defensive front as the foundation. However, the Lions need their linebackers and secondary to complement that strength before the defense can become reliable.

Dan Campbell Provides Encouraging Brian Branch Injury Update

Detroit could soon receive some much-needed help in the secondary. Dan Campbell recently said Brian Branch is close to returning after missing time with an Achilles injury.

Branch's return would give the defense a major boost, especially with Kerby Joseph also sidelined. His versatility could help Detroit address several of the problems that have plagued the secondary.

The Lions still have plenty to fix, but Branch's potential return offers reason for optimism. Until then, Campbell and Sheppard must find answers quickly as Detroit searches for a defensive identity.
