The Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has given an update on running back Jahmyr Gibbs' injury amid the player's pending contract extension deal as well.

Campbell earlier talked about the three-time Pro Bowl star's injury back on Thursday, July 30. He told the media that Gibbs was suffering from a bit of a back issue after completing his conditioning test for the team. Campbell has now given another short update on the injury.

"No, I don't think it's severe," Campbell said on Friday, July 31, when a reporter asked him about the severity of Gibbs' back injury in the post-practice press conference on Day 3 of the training camp.

Campbell's update during the presser, as posted by the Lions YouTube channel, was crucial since Gibbs has not been present on the field. The running back has not participated in any of the training camp days since it started on July 25 at the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park, Michigan.

Gibbs reportedly injured his back during his conditioning test.

Meanwhile, the franchise would want Gibbs to get fit as soon as possible, given the stakes that he holds in the team's success. Ever since joining the Lions as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, he has been tremendous.

Just last year, Gibbs showcased his excellence, having a total of 1,223 rushing yards, 1,839 scrimmage yards, and 616 receiving yards, along with 18 rushing and receiving touchdowns.

But the back problem isn't the only thing that has caused Gibbs to be absent from the training sessions, as reports suggest another angle as well.

Gibbs has been out of practice amid his contract extension being discussed. Gibbs is currently on a four-year, fully guaranteed, $17.8 million contract that also includes a $9.9 million signing bonus.

His current market value is $60.4 million for a three-year deal, with an average annual salary valued at $20.2 million. Gibbs is receiving a $45,000 fine per day for not attending the training camp sessions. Amid this, Campbell is confident the deal will get done soon.

"You guys know how I feel, how we feel about Gibbs and what the team feels about him, and I’ll leave it at that,” Campbell said after Day 2 camp. “My job is to coach who’s out there right now, and I love the kid, but man, I’ve got a team to coach right now. And listen…at some point here, it’ll get done. It’s going to get done. I’m not even sweating it."

The highest-paid running back in the NFL currently is the Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley, averaging $20.6 million annually. Given where Gibbs is being valued right now, he could surpass that if the contract extension goes well for him.
