Dan Campbell has put his new defensive end on notice. Speaking from the NFL's annual meeting, the Lions coach outlined the high expectations for Payton Turner.

The 27-year-old has been tasked with capitalizing on the attention star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson commands. During the 2026 Annual League Meeting, in Phoenix, Arizona, the head coach, Dan Campbell, was asked about the importance of a consistent pass-rush.

“That’s always gonna be the key,” Dan Campbell said. “The quicker that we can get there and at least create a pressure where the quarterback has to move, has to make an off-balance throw, that tenth of a second makes all the difference in the world. Muhammad did a good job for us last year opposite of Hutch."

Post Al-Quadin Muhammad’s release to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2026 free agency. The Detroit Lions signed Payton Turner and DJ Wonnum to replace him in the Lions' defensive line. 

"Whoever is opposite of Hutch, they have the opportunity to benefit and make the most of it, and Muhammad did that. We feel like Wonnum can do that, we’re hoping (Payton) Turner’s got something there," said Campbell. "But yeah, Hutch is really kind of the engine on that front. That’s kind of where it starts.”

Wonnum brings high-effort run defense, durability, and versatility in the game.

On the other hand, Payton Turner is known for his high-effort play, impressive physical traits (6'6", 270 lbs, long wingspan), and ability to play both inside and outside.

With Muhhamad out, now it’s on Turner and Wonnum's chance to prove that they can turn the opportunity into production and be a reliable pair for Aidan Hutchinson.

Does Payton Turner Fit Dan Campbell's Expectations?

When Dan Campbell talked about the edge spot opposite Aidan Hutchinson, he defined what the requirements of that position were.

Hutchinson drives the front, and the player across from him is expected to capitalize on the attention he draws.

The expectation isn’t just to fill snaps, it’s to create impact, as Al-Quadin Muhammad did.

Compared to Al-Quadin Muhammad’s standout 2025 showing of 11 sacks and 25 total tackles, Payton Turner’s numbers (just 2 sacks and 21 combined tackles) paint a far quieter picture. That said, at just 27, Turner still has time on his side.

Turner brings the size and flexibility Detroit looks for, but here’s the reality: Turner is still unproven at the NFL level.

Injuries have slowed his development, including a broken rib setback that kept him out of the 2025 season.
