Dan Campbell reacts to Detroit Lions injury setback

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell watches practice during mini camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

The Detroit Lions have suffered a setback in their backfield with Isiah Pacheco dealing with an injury that will keep him out of action.

Pacheco was expected to provide depth behind Jahmyr Gibbs and give Detroit another option at running back. His absence could now force the Lions to rely more heavily on their remaining players.

Jacob Saylors could benefit from the situation, and Dan Campbell appears comfortable with him taking on a bigger role. The Lions head coach believes Saylors’ familiarity with the team gives him an important advantage.

Speaking to reporters, Campbell explained why he is comfortable with Saylors and the other running backs.

Yeah, listen. I’m comfortable, I am. I’m comfortable with that. I like those guys, and I just like the thought of having a guy in our system. You know, I think that’s important. Knows our terminology, knows our guys, knows, you know, the protections, just kind of knows it all, man. Understands our quarterback and how he thinks. I just think that’s important, and so really all of those guys, you know, I feel pretty good about.”

Familiarity could prove valuable for Detroit

Dan Campbell’s comments highlight why having players familiar with the Lions’ system can be valuable when unexpected situations arise.

Jacob Saylors knows Detroit’s terminology, protections and offensive personnel. He also understands how the team operates around its quarterback, meaning he would not have to learn everything from scratch if his role increases.

That familiarity could help make the transition smoother as Detroit adjusts to Pacheco’s absence. The Lions will need their depth players ready, and Campbell’s comments suggest he has confidence in the group to step up.
