Dan Campbell put on hot seat as Lions' Super Bowl window gets tighter

Despite leading the Detroit Lions to an NFC Championship appearance in 2023 and the top seed in 2024, Dan Campbell enters the 2026 season as one of the coaches on the hot seat.

According to Bill Williamson of SBNation, Campbell is one of five coaches to be surprise hot seat candidates in 2026.

“Overall, Campbell has done a good job making the Lions relevant, and he runs a strong program,” wrote Williamson. “But if the Lions, who went 9-8, fail to make the playoffs for a second year in a row and show signs of regression, he could be in trouble.”

Campbell and company are trying their best to bring back the "grittiness" in Motor City. However, Williamson believes that the Lions’ opportunity to win the Lombardi is getting slimmer as their division becomes more competitive.

“The NFC North is stacked, and the Lions’ window may be getting tighter,” added Bill Williamson of SBNation. “So, there’s not a lot of time to fool around in the Motor City.”

Last season was a major disappointment for the Lions, as they finished last in their division and missed the playoffs entirely for the first time since 2022.

However, injuries were a primary factor, with 2024 standouts Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, Terrion Arnold, and Alim McNeill all sidelined for some portions of the year.

While Arnold was released this offseason due to his legal troubles and with the return of Branch and Joseph not yet clear, it might be tough for Campbell to reach the playoffs.

However, a Fox Sports commentator maintains that the Lions have playoff-caliber talent, while reinforcing that the pressure on Campbell is immense.

Ex-NFL star and Fox Sports Commentator believes that there is pressure on Campbell

Three-time Super Bowl winner, former offensive lineman, and current Fox Sports commentator Mark Schlereth, on 10 July, opened up on his thoughts about the Lions going into next season.

“There’s no question the pressure is on Dan Campbell,” said Schlereth on his The Stinkin Truth podcast. “I still think they’re one of the most talented rosters in football...You get Jameson Williams as a wide receiver, you talk about (Jahmyr) Gibbs at running back, you talk about their tight end, they have a ton of offensive weapons.”

Schlereth also called offensive tackle Penei Sewell one of the best offensive linemen and the best football player on the Lions' roster. He also called wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown one of the best in football as well.

So, if Campbell can successfully integrate his returning stars, he has a prime chance to quiet the doubters, cool down his hot seat, and finally deliver a championship to Motown.
