With much of the Lions' roster still up for grabs entering training camp, Dan Campbell made it clear that draft status alone won't guarantee playing time. The Detroit head coach expects his younger players to prove they belong.

"Certainly, we're younger than we were. In that, there's good things about that, you know, the youth...," Campbell said, per Josh Helmer of Lions Wire. "We're going to have to work through, because, as you know, there's going to be a learning curve for some guys. Development and how fast they can go." 

Rather than offering assurances, Campbell stressed that competition would determine who earns a place on the roster, regardless of expectations.

"So, I like the group we have; nothing is set in stone. There are some guys that you feel pretty good about. I'd be shocked if they don't win their jobs." Campbell added, as per Josh Helmer of Lions Wire.

Campbell indicated that younger players will have a limited window during training camp to prove themselves before the team considers other options.

This is intensified by what happened on defense in 2025. Defensive Coordinator Kelvin Sheppard said that the Lions allowed 105 explosive plays last year, with 30-40% of those plays being caused by the Lions' own mistakes.

Campbell's biggest priority is to eliminate those mistakes. Regardless of the shaky parts of the offseason. He is entering training camp with real optimism that this Lions team is ready to be competitive.

Now, three weeks from rookies reporting, he showed that confidence clearly when he departed minicamp.

"I'm excited. I am. I feel really good about where we're at right now. I feel great about the staff, and I feel like we have the right type of players that we're going to need to rely on," Campbell said, via Dave Birkett of Detroit Free Press, on June 23. "There is no greater motivator than the guy who's pushing you. He's trying to get what you think is yours. There's nothing better."

Campbell's confidence comes despite an eventful offseason. The Lions released former first-round cornerback Terrion Arnold, while safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph continue to recover from injuries, leaving questions in the secondary entering training camp.

Even so, Detroit returns quarterback Jared Goff, among other offensive playmakers. The Lions also reshaped their offensive line, giving Campbell confidence that the team can remain competitive in 2026.

With training camp approaching, Campbell expects his younger players to prove they belong as the Lions begin their push toward the 2026 season.
