Dan Campbell gave the latest update on Kerby Joseph's recovery from the knee injury that sidelined him for most of the 2025 season.
While the Lions have stayed positive throughout the rehabilitation process, the head coach admitted that there is no specific timeline regarding Joseph's return.
"I honestly do not know," Dan Campbell told reporters Thursday. "We are trying to be as smart as we can and not push this until we absolutely have to because once we've done that, then we'll know one way or another."
The Lions are avoiding forcing him onto the field, believing that a patient approach gives him the best chance of making a complete recovery.
The uncertainty is bothering because Joseph has become one of Detroit's defensive cornerstones. In 2024, when he was healthy, he had 83 tackles (58 solo) and a league-high nine interceptions in 17 starts.
But he missed 11 games last season due to a cartilage issue in his knee. The head coach did not comment on what kind of therapy Joseph is going through, but the safety did post on social media about an acupuncture treatment.
With Joseph not available right now, the Lions have spent the offseason working on their secondary depth. The additions of veterans such as Chuck Clark (S), Christian Izien (S), and Avonte Maddox (CB) provide insurance while the team waits for clarity on Joseph's health.
Along with Joseph, Campbell also announced the setback of a rookie player of the Lions.
Dan Campbell Confirms Lions' Rookie, Kendrick Law's Major Setback
The Detroit Lions received difficult news during offseason workouts as rookie wide receiver Kendrick Law is now out of the entire 2026 season after suffering a torn ACL in a non-contact drill at OTAs.
“The kid was doing a good job,” Campbell said Thursday. “It’s a harsh reality. He’ll get it out of the way early, have his whole career in front of him.”
The fifth-round pick was making a positive impression on coaches and was expected to contribute as a depth receiver and special teams unit. Campbell expressed disappointment over the injury, noting that he had been doing well before the setback.
After being transferred from Alabama, he led the Wildcats in receptions with 53, racked up 540 receiving yards, and scored three receiving touchdowns.
Despite the loss, Campbell mentioned that the rookie has plenty of time to build a successful NFL career and will make his debut next year, spending this year in the rehab and treatment process.
