After the departure of Taylor Decker from the Motor City team, head coach Dan Campbell has hinted at switching Penei Sewell to protect the blind side of Jared Goff, not everyone in the NFL universe is considering it worth the gamble. 

According to detroitlionspodcast.com, transferring Penei Sewell to ‌left tackle would reshape the Detroit Lions’ offensive identity. In a bold move, right tackle Sewell is set to be moved from his proven right tackle position to the new left tackle position for the 2026 NFL season. 

GM Brad Holmes is eager to fill the void created by the leaving of Decker in free agency. During the 2026 NFL draft, the Lions also selected the Clemson product, Blake Miller, as the first-round, 17th overall pick. 

According to sources, Campbell is looking forward to using Sewell’s rare athletic ability to anchor Jared Goff’s blind side, along with rookie Miller at his complementary position. 

Not only this, but Holmes also signed Larry Borom in free agency to increase the depth on the tackle chart. 

The major concern of many NFL pundits here is that Sewell does not have ‌proven left tackle experience. He has only played as LT during his collegiate career at Oregon and the first half of his rookie season.

According to PFF, he filled in for Decker back in his rookie season and appeared in 8 games as a left tackle. 

He played 976 offensive snaps in his rookie season, where he allowed five sacks overall and earned a PFF grade of 78.0.

With his little experience at the position, he has shown promising performance, his stats also back up the claim. But is the gamble even required?

As the offensive lineup goes through the reshuffle, the tight end chart is seeing competition between veterans and younger talents.

Dan Campbell faces tough decision at tight end

As reported by detroitlionspodcast.com, the Motown team’s tight end chart is looking at a heavy competition between the veteran and the younger talents. 

The TE position was previously dominated by Sam LaPorta, but his trade speculations and missing the major part of the OTAs have left the position of TE1 in limbo. 

The other option was free agent Tyler Conklin, who is known for his blocking and catching ability and could act as a weapon for Jared Goff. 

However, the arrivals of undrafted free agents Zach Horton and Miles Kitzelman have added further depth at tight end, which could result in a veteran losing a roster spot, according to reports.

Another name, Brock Wright, as the TE3 for the Lions, but his inconsistency with his availability might affect his selection on the roster. 

With multiple players competing for limited spots, Dan Campbell has a challenging decision to make at tight end.
