The Detroit Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, continues to set that tone for next year in the offseason. During a recent media session, Campbell gave fans a promising update on two young stars- Kerby Joseph and Sam LaPorta.
Joseph and LaPorta have become foundational pieces for the Lions. Campbell addressed both players' current physical status and also highlighted how important they are to Detroit's plans entering the 2026 season.
"So we're working through it. This time of year is about communication, man," said Campbell at the OTA Day 3 press conference. "Working your craft, getting better at what you do, and then, man, learning to work with the guy next to you, whoever it is."
Campbell's comments showed confidence after physically demanding seasons. Joseph rose as one of Detroit's most impactful defensive playmakers last year, while LaPorta continued proving himself as one of the NFL's top young tight ends.
In fact, both players have played with the Lions all their NFL careers. The former, a 2022 3rd round pick, and the latter, picked in the 2nd round in 2023.
"Nobody's going to win a job in the spring, so that's where we're at. Kerby, Branch, LaPorta, they're all improving," he added.
Joseph missed the final 11 games of last season because of a degenerative condition of his knee. Brian Branch suffered from a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg in December's win over the Cowboys. LaPorta had a herniated disc in his back in November.
LaPorta has quickly evolved into one of Jared Goff's most trusted offensive weapons, amassing 20 touchdowns and 2,000+ yards in his three seasons thus far.
Having both Joseph and LaPorta healthy during the offseason work gives Detroit stability on both sides of the ball. The Lions are also drafting, developing, and re-signing players to make their roster strong.
Lions Reward Jack Campbell After Defensive Rise in Detroit
The Detroit Lions continue building around their young core by locking up linebacker Jack Campbell with a four-year extension contract of $81 million. Now locked in through 2030, he's developed into one of the NFL's top defenders.
"It's just really surreal," Campbell said Wednesday as per CBS Sports. "I can't thank enough people."
He expressed gratitude after securing his long-term future in Detroit. The first-round pick also reacted to criticism he faced after being drafted in 2023.
He explained that his motivation was never about proving others wrong but instead rewarding the faith shown by the Lions' franchise.
Detroit's front office has now locked in several cornerstone players, including Aidan Hutchinson, Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, and Kerby Joseph.
