Dan Campbell Defends Jared Goff's Game Following Ben Johnson's Viral Comments

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) talks to head coach Dan Campbell before a play against Dallas Cowboys during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025.

Jared Goff has found himself at the center of another debate after his former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, made headlines. The Bears head coach was asked about calling plays for Case Keenum, a quarterback who is not particularly mobile. Johnson responded that he had “a little history with that,” appearing to reference his time working with Goff.

The comment quickly sparked questions about whether Goff’s lack of mobility limits the Lions' offense. That question was put directly to Dan Campbell, who had no hesitation defending his quarterback. Instead, Campbell highlighted the qualities that have made Goff so successful in Detroit.

“No. Goff's game is cerebral. That's his game, and he's damn good at it. We run the offense we run, and we're good at it because of Jared Goff.”

Campbell’s response was especially timely given Goff’s start to the 2026 season. Through three games, he has thrown for 802 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions while completing 70.6 percent of his passes.

That production explains why Campbell refuses to view mobility as a weakness. Goff does not need to escape the pocket to dictate games, because his processing, accuracy and decision-making allow him to control them from within the offense.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Wants to Win With Jared Goff

Amon-Ra St. Brown has previously made it clear that he and Goff share something important: a desire to silence the critics by winning the biggest games. St. Brown said winning a Super Bowl with Goff would strengthen both players’ legacies after Detroit’s previous playoff disappointments.

That makes Campbell’s defense particularly significant. Goff has spent years hearing questions about whether his limitations prevent him from reaching the NFL’s highest level.

Yet his Lions teammates continue to believe his strengths outweigh those limitations. For Detroit, the answer to the Goff debate may ultimately come on the biggest stage, where winning could silence far more than one comment from Johnson.
