The Detroit Lions believe they may have found a crucial piece to keep their offensive running. Head coach Dan Campbell has also shown excitement about the team's newest addition, center Cade Mays, who could help stabilize the offensive line.

After reshaping parts of the offensive line this offseason, the Lions signed Mays to a three-year deal worth $25 million. Campbell has talked about what the veteran lineman could bring to Detroit's offense.

"I like those guys," Campbell said via DetroitLions.com. "And it's early, but Cade, he's a good-looking dude, man. He's a big man, he's built right, moves pretty good. And now it's just getting up to speed with our terminology, the MIKE points, all that. But I like Cade, man, he's a good fit for us."

Detroit Lions center Cade Mays (64) is being interviewed after practice during OTAs at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Friday, May 29, 2026.

The Lions entered free agency looking for a reliable center and ranked Mays among the best options available.

Campbell's statement suggests the coaching staff believes Mays can immediately make the passing and running stronger while providing stability at one of the offense's most important positions.

Mays arrived in Detroit after four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He appeared in 52 games and made 27 starts, establishing his reputation as a versatile and reliable offensive lineman.

He earned a 62.4 overall grade and ranked 13th among qualified NFL centers in pass blocking in 2025, as per PFF Rating.

Mays said he loved Detroit's style of play and felt the Lions' physical identity matched his approach to football. He seemed to be getting along well with both HC Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff.

As the Lions continue to chase a Super Bowl, Mays could become one of the most impactful additions this offseason.

Lions' Center Cade Mays Connects With QB Jared Goff

As Cade Mays continues settling into Detroit's offensive line, one connection stands above all others- the contact between the center and the QB. Mays explained how important it was to build chemistry with Jared Goff as he prepares for his first season in Detroit.

"It's very important," Mays said via DetroitLions.com. "We've just got to be on the same page and communicate the same. Learning how he sees things and how he communicates, and just upping my game on that level."

The center-quarterback partnership is important for the offense's success, with both players responsible for identifying defensive looks and making adjustments before the snap.

For Mays, understanding Goff is part of earning trust and helping the offense work smoothly. The new center's focus could play an important role in maintaining the high standards the Lions have established.
