Dan Campbell and Co. Warned By Ex-Lions Star Over Frank Ragnow Controversy

A contract dispute is creating friction in Detroit. Former Lions star Herman Moore publicly warned the team over its decision to seek repayment from retired center Frank Ragnow, a move that echoes past controversies.
Former Lions star Moore posted an article on X titled, “Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should,” cautioning Dan Campbell and the franchise about potential losses with such a decision.
Frank Ragnow announced his retirement in June 2025. He later attempted a comeback, but after failing a physical in November, his return to the field fell through. That development led the Detroit Lions to seek repayment of previously paid money.
“The business side is the business side. When money is asked back, that can be talked through and worked out,” Moore wrote in the post.
Moore touched upon how, after seven long years at the franchise, this was now a public incident that the NFL world was witnessing.
“When that spills into the public space, it creates division, and don't think other players (or their representatives) don't see it," Moore continued. "They remember it when it’s time for their own negotiation and contract discussions.”

In 2021, Ragnow signed a contract extension that included a $6M signing bonus, which was spread across the deal and counted $1.5 million against the salary cap each year.
Under the NFL’s CBA, the teams are allowed to recoup the remaining portion of the bonus if the player retires, and the Lions stuck to it. Moreover, this isn’t the first time the Lions have leaned on this policy.
When Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson retired before their contracts ended, the team required Sanders to repay over $7M of his signing bonus and Johnson about $1.5M. They were both estranged from the team for years after that.
“When it comes to decisions like this, there’s room to make a different call," Moore's take further read. "There are players who go above and beyond, who represent everything an organization says it stands for, who lay it on the line over and over again.”
Even several other NFL players, analysts, and fans criticized how franchise CEO Rod Wood handled the situation, expressing clear disagreement with his approach, and he had a reply to that.
Rod Wood’s Reason Behind Sticking To The Policy
In opposition to the Detroit Lions’ decision came former Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone and former Eagles center Jason Kelce.
Both discussed how much Frank Ragnow contributed to the team and why he should be spared from the repayment, with Kelce writing a long post regarding it on his X.
In response, Rod Wood defended the decision by framing it as a financial obligation.
“I think the reality is, they're not paying back their money, they're returning our money," Wood said. "Cause they were paid in advance for services that they hadn't completed.”
There have been no reported comments from Dan Campbell on the controversy. What do you think the Lions should have done?
