Dan Skipper's retirement lasted just a month. The offensive lineman couldn't keep himself away from the sport. He is returning to the Detroit Lions coaching staff.

On 11 February 2026, CBS Detroit, Rachael Hopmayer shared a post on the X platform where she wrote, 

"Good morning: #Lions fan favourite and recently retired OL Dan Skipper has been hired to Detroit’s coaching staff. He’ll be molding the next jumbo TEs in no time."

After winning against the Chicago 19-16 on January 5, 2026. Skipper retired from playing due to recurring back issues. And while Skipper had promised a return to the sport in the form of a coach, fans didn't expect the change to come so quickly.

As an offensive lineman with the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans, Dan Skipper played eight NFL seasons in 69 regular-season games. During 2024 and 2025, he played regularly, including several starts, and even scored a rare 9-yard touchdown as a lineman during the 2024 season.

Skipper could be a strong addition to the coaching staff that is seeing a lot of changes at the moment.

Detroit Lions Make Plenty of Offensive Changes

Dan Skipper joins as the assistant offensive line coach. Steve Oliver looks set to take over the tight ends coaching job from Sean Ryan, who became the pass game coordinator for the New York Jets.

But that's not all. The Lions are looking to complete their offensive line coaching staff in the coming days. They have already brought Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, as well as Mike Kafka, to work on the passing game.

Moreover, we will likely see a few new players joining the offensive line. With center Graham Glasgow and left tackle Taylor Decker on the verge of retirement, Skipper joins the team in a rebuilding phase. Will he be able to reinforce the team?
