Cris Carter slams Dan Campbell for 4th down decision

The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 in Week 7. However, Dan Campbell's late fourth-down gamble drew severe criticism.

With the score tied at 17 and under five minutes left, Dan Campbell went for it on fourth down at Detroit's own 24-yard line. Jahmyr Gibbs lost two yards, giving Green Bay possession.

On the Fully Loaded Podcast, Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter told co-host Shawn Meaike that punting would have forced the Packers to cover more ground to reach scoring range:

"There is no analytics that tells you to go for it on your side of the field at that time of the game. Now, I heard someone on ESPN this morning saying something stupid. Former quarterback. They said, 'Well, it gives you a decision. You know what the other team's going to do,' but guess what? What about punting them all the way down there and you still get the same decision?"

Carter's argument centered on the field position Detroit risked surrendering with the failed attempt. The Lions escaped with the win, but the decision gave Green Bay a chance to steal the game late.

Green Bay had a chance to take the lead, but D.J. Wonnum blocked Trey Smack's 35-yard field-goal attempt to keep the score tied.

Jared Goff then led Detroit downfield, setting up Jake Bates for a 22-yard field goal as time ran out. The kick sealed the Lions' 20-17 divisional win at Ford Field, taking them to 4-2 after Week 7.
