Calvin Johnson appeared on the NFL Network, which aired on May 19, discussing the challenges that rookies and veterans face as they enter the new season. The topic popped up as teams, including the Detroit Lions, get ready for the offseason training and OTAs.

"Adversity is going to be there, it's going to slap you in the face probably day one," Johnson said. "You're going to get knocked down, you're going to get punched in the mouth, but can you get back up?"

Johnson's rhetorical question came at a moment when Detroit recently finalized its rookie class and continues to build expectations for a competitive 2026 campaign.

Many analysts, such as Mike Florio and Chris Simms, believe the Lions have a Super Bowl window. Even in an uneven 2025 campaign, they had a winning record despite finishing bottom of the division.

One of the biggest concerns was defensive depth because multiple veterans have departed in free agency, including Alex Anzalone, Amik Robertson, DJ Reader, and Roy Lopez.

To deal with this, the franchise tackled both the free agency market and the 2026 NFL draft. DJ Wonnum was added in free agency and a draft class that leaned heavily defensive, with five defensive picks and only two on offense.

Now, many of these new faces are expected to compete for major roles during OTAs. The team's success depends on players if they return to form after injuries.

The OTAs scheduled for May 27-29 will therefore focus on whether the defense and young players can handle adversity early. That's exactly where Johnson's advice could come in.
