Calvin Johnson Calls His Bet On Puka Nacua For Major NFL Record

Records are meant to be broken, but when an NFL legend points to a specific player as the one capable of doing it, people pay attention. The Los Angeles Rams' Puka Nacua has the best chance of surpassing one more record.

Calvin Johnson, the former Detroit Lions' wide receiver, showed confidence in Nacua's ability to challenge and break his long-standing single-season receiving yards record of 1,964 yards, especially under quarterback Matthew Stafford, leading the Rams' offense.

“That would be kind of dope [if Stafford helped Nacua break my record],” Johnson told Detroit Free Press. “I’d have to go to that game if he did that, cause I like Puka. He’s getting some c**p out of his system that’s just a young guy, just learning, but I think he’s an awesome, dynamic receiver.”

A giant banner of Calvin Johnson hangs inside Ford Field during the Detroit Lions 2025 Food & Beverage Media Preview at Ford Field on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025.

Johnson sees traits in Nacua that remind him of the elite receivers capable of creating historic seasons.

While acknowledging that Nacua is still growing as a player, he praised his ability to impact games in multiple ways.

The 25-year-old Nacua has already built a resume that supports Johnson's prediction. He holds the record of 1,486 yards, breaking Bill Groman's 63-year-old record of 1,473 yards.

He tied with Odell Beckham Jr. for the fastest 30 games in NFL history to reach 200 career receptions.

Just last year, Nacua had his career-best figures with 1,715 receiving yards with a league high 129 receptions.

At the Detroit Lions, Johnson enjoyed some of the best years of his career catching passes from Matthew Stafford, and he knows firsthand how a talented quarterback can increase a receiver's production. That is a reason why Johnson believes Nacua can beat his record.

However, Nacua is not just rewriting history but also predicting the future.

Puka Nacua's World Cup Prediction Proves Spot-On as the USA Dominates Paraguay

Puka Nacua was confident about the United States ahead of its FIFA World Cup opener at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. In fact, he even correctly predicted a USA win in their opening game.

“I’m taking USA for the win on Friday, at SoFi." said Nacua in a video shared by NFL Network on X on June 12. "I’m gonna be there, cheering on a 2-1 victory for the United States.”

Before the kickoff, he predicted that the USMNT (United States Men's National Soccer Team) would win against Paraguay while attending the Group D clash.

His prediction turned out to be right. The United States gave one of its most impressive World Cup performances, scoring a 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

Folarin Balogun scored twice as the Americans made a dream start to their home World Cup campaign. This win puts the U.S. in a strong position in Group D to qualify for the knockout stages.
