Calvin Johnson beats Detroit icons to claim a major honor

Calvin Johnson has earned another major honor years after his playing career ended, securing a place on Bleacher Report's Mount Rushmore of Detroit athletes since 2000. The recognition puts the Hall of Fame wide receiver alongside some of the greatest names in the city's sports history.
Johnson was joined by Tigers legend Miguel Cabrera, Red Wings icon Nicklas Lidstrom, and Pistons great Ben Wallace, as Detroit's Rushmore.
"'Megatron' [Calvin Johnson] played only nine seasons, but he put together a Hall of Fame career as one of the most physically dominant receivers in history," wrote Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report.
According to Joel Reuter's statement on Bleacher Report, Johnson's dominance was evident from the moment he entered the NFL as the second overall pick in the 2007 draft.

He consistently outplayed elite defenders. The 2012 season was one of the greatest receiving seasons ever as he recorded 1,964 receiving yards, which still stands as the NFL's single-season record. Over nine seasons, he totaled 731 receptions for 11,619 receiving yards and 83 touchdowns.
Megatron earned six Pro Bowl selections, three First-Team All-Pro honors, and led the NFL in receiving yards twice. In 2021, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, marking his place among football's legends.
Johnson's place among Detroit's greatest athletes is because of a career that defined excellence at the WR position.

Johnson's inclusion on Detroit's Mount Rushmore also reflects the lasting impact of the player fans knew as "Megatron," a nickname that became synonymous with unmatched physical dominance at wide receiver.

Standing 6-foot-5 with his athleticism, Johnson made impossible catches look normal, leaving defenders with fewer chances.
His combination of size, speed, and athleticism earned him the nickname "Megatron," inspired by the iconic Transformers villain.
Even after his retirement, he remains the gold standard for physical dominance as a WR, and his legacy continues to shape conversations about the greatest WRs in NFL history.
