The debate over who the NFL’s best young quarterbacks are has taken an interesting turn after former NFL offensive lineman and analyst Mark Schlereth shared his opinion.

While speaking on The Stinkin’ Truth podcast alongside co-host Mike Evans, Schlereth explained why he believes the Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams is not as good as the Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix.

“Bo Nix was better than Caleb at doing the boring stuff,” said Schlereth. “I’m very critical about his footwork and his pocket presence at times, and so there are a lot of missed throws and missed opportunities in Bo Nix’s games, just like in Caleb Williams’ game.”

Caleb Williams was seen as the consensus No.1 overall pick and was selected first overall by the Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Bo Nix was selected 12th overall by the Broncos in the very same draft. To Schlereth's point, Nix had a better rookie year than Williams and was an AP Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist.

"So, from a quarterback standpoint, I think Bo Nix is ahead of Caleb Williams right now, and I think that’s partly because that’s the way he played at Oregon the same," Mark Schlereth said on the Stinkin Truth podcast.

Over their careers, Nix has amassed 7,706 passing yards and 786 rushing yards; Williams has recorded 7,483 passing yards and 877 rushing yards.

Nix has 63 total touchdowns and has thrown 23 interceptions. Meanwhile, Williams has 50 total touchdowns and 13 interceptions. 

Nix, on one hand, has made the playoffs twice, in 2024 and 2025, and has led the Broncos to the divisional round in 2025. It can be argued that the Broncos would have won the AFC championship if not for Nix's broken ankle.

Williams, on the other hand, only made the playoffs in 2025. He also led the team to the divisional round but threw three interceptions and eventually lost the game 20-17 to the Los Angeles Rams.

However, one NFL analyst still believes that Williams and the Bears could be one of the best offenses in the league next season.

Bears tied for best offensive structure by NFL analyst

Since the arrival of former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach, the Bears’ offense has been one of the best in the league. Now, their overall offensive structure has been ranked as the best in the league, tied only with the Los Angeles Rams.

CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin ranked teams using a weighted grading system, evaluating the teams’ structure by rating their play caller (head coach/offensive coordinator), offensive line, pass catchers, and running backs.

According to Dubin, Chicago possesses one of the best offensive minds in Ben Johnson and great depth in their passing-catching group compared to the rest of the league. He also believes that both the Rams and the Bears possess an above-average to good offensive line and solid running backs.

He also mentioned how, while Matthew Stafford was the better player, it is still very much possible for Caleb Williams to be at the same level.

“When you account for the quarterback, the Rams have the advantage, and that’s why Matthew Stafford was able to win MVP last year,” wrote Dubin. “But in a vacuum, Caleb Williams has just about as good a chance for success on a play-to-play basis as he does because of the talent around him in all areas of the field.”
