Quarterback Caleb Williams is preparing for another season with the Bears, and NFL insiders are beginning to notice shades of Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes. A bold take recently backed the 2027 Madden cover star to have a stellar trajectory.

Williams, the Chicago Bears' former No. 1 overall pick, has won the hearts of viewers with his talent, controlling late-game comebacks, and delivering under intense pressure. NFL.com's analyst Bucky Brooks, on Saturday, compared Williams to the star QB Patrick Mahomes, saying;

"If Williams continues to refine his game under Johnson’s direction, the league is on the verge of witnessing the birth of a megastar who could rival Patrick Mahomes as the ultimate late-game closer.”

Patrick Mahomes is the benchmark for quarterback success, while Williams rose as one of the dangerous fourth-quarter QBs and has a knack for extending plays and creating offense outside structure. This has led to comparisons with Mahomes' style.

Williams finished last season with 3,942 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions while leading the Bears to one of the best seasons in years.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also described Williams as one of the NFL's best closers, while other analysts continue to talk about his elite playmaking ability.

In two seasons with the Bears, Williams has a record of 16-18 with 60.3% pass completion for 7,483 passing yards, 47 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Mahomes' achievements are considered the gold standard across the league. Whereas Williams has not yet levelled up to that point in his career.

Part of reaching that level will depend on continued development within Ben Johnson's offense.

Williams has already shown elite playmaking ability, but he believes refining the finer details of his game is what will help him close the gap between potential and production.

How Caleb Williams Plans to Reach the Next Level

Caleb Williams' approach is to stay one step ahead of opposing defenses.

After his 2025 breakout season under the head coach Ben Johnson, he believes improved accuracy, decision-making, and control over the offense will make him stronger, per Bears Round Table.

Johnson shared that the Bears calculate Williams' accuracy on a daily basis through a grading system on every throw.

By improving his efficiency and adapting to Johnson's system, he hopes he can beat the defense on the field.

Williams still has work to do before entering the same conversation as Mahomes, but analysts such as Brooks believe the foundation is already there. How quickly he develops under Johnson could determine whether those comparisons continue to grow.
