In just two seasons, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams broke the franchise's postseason drought by reaching the divisional round. However, a former NFL scout claims the young star is highly overrated.

Former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly has claimed that Williams has regressed in two major areas: accuracy and decision-making.

“Caleb Williams is the Most Overrated Player in the NFL,” Kelly wrote on X. “During the 2025 regular season, Williams had the worst accuracy of any returning starter in the NFL this season (58.1%). Williams has backup-level accuracy at this point in his NFL career *11/13 active NFL quarterbacks with a sub-60% regular season completion percentage are backups around the league.”

Kelly, who made his points clear via the First Round Mock account on X, provided metrics to support his claim. He alleges that over his first two seasons in Chicago, Williams’ processing time slowed while his accuracy deteriorated.

According to Kelly, Williams’ average time-to-throw increased from 3.03 seconds in 2024 to 3.24 seconds in 2025.

The former scout cited ESPN data for Williams’ completion percentage that fell from 62.5% as a rookie to 58.1% in 2025, before plummeting to 52.2% during the postseason.

While his statistical regression is a valid concern, Williams’ elite arm talent and playmaking ability remain unquestioned. He logged a league-high six fourth-quarter comebacks last season, guiding the Bears to their first playoff berth since 2020.

With training camps approaching, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler released the results of a league-wide survey of over 70 NFL executives, coaches, and scouts on July 13.

Two NFC North quarterbacks landed on the list: Detroit Lions' Jared Goff at No. 9 and Caleb Williams at No. 10.

Following intense competition with Sam Darnold, Jayden Daniels, and Jordan Love, Williams secured the spot because he was considered the “hardest of the four for teams to prepare for and defend.”

While one general manager labeled Williams the most dynamic quarterback and an evaluator praised him as a closer, a veteran coach even compared him to Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes.

“[He] has some of those ‘what is he doing?’ plays,” said a veteran coach. “But he also makes plays only he and Mahomes can make. [He] can throw from any angle, deceptively fast when forced to scramble, and he’s got the ‘it’ factor in crunch time.”

However, if Williams wants to cement himself as a top 10 quarterback in the league, he will have to improve on last season.
