David Montgomery is entering a completely new chapter after the veteran running back was traded to the Houston Texans. Now, the RB has opened up about what it has been like sharing the field with young Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud instead of Jared Goff.

During Montgomery's appearance on NightCap, Deebo & Joe, he appreciated the Houston Texans' QB, C.J. Stroud. As he shared a locker room with Goff, he compared Stroud's passing ability to that of one of the NFL's most accurate veterans.

"Yeah, like he(C.J. Stroud) really composed, he can make some crazy passes," said Montgomery. "Like I've seen, I've been around Jared G...he's up there with those guys of being able to place the ball where he wants to, when he wants to do it."

Montgomery is a proven expert, having played alongside Goff in Detroit for over three seasons (2023-2025). While speaking on the Nightcap Show on YouTube, he suggested that Stroud already has the accuracy and confidence that feels familiar.

Stroud can read defenses and remain calm under high pressure. As a starter, he has a record of 28-18, and has over 900 completions and 10,000+ yards since he entered the NFL. He also became the youngest player to hit 450+ passing yards in a single game in 2023.

Meanwhile, Goff has a reputation as one of the NFL's most efficient passers, producing four consecutive 4,400-yard seasons while leading Detroit's powerful offense, starting every game since 2022.

While Montgomery's comparison showed why C.J. Stroud is so highly regarded, the Texans now face the big question: How much is that reputation worth negotiating?

Stroud's future in Houston stays secure, but his next contract appears far from being finalized.

Even after being eligible for a lucrative extension of $51.6 million, negotiations between the Texans and the QB have been stuck as training camp arrives.

“Not a lot of momentum on a deal, talks are essentially on pause as of now,” as per Fowler of ESPN. “Now, Houston has been aggressive paying players. They’ve been paying defensive players like Danielle Hunter, Will Anderson, Azeez Al-Shaair. So if they want to take care of Stroud, they’re going to have to make some progress this summer.”

The Houston Texans appear to be taking a more cautious route before committing long-term money to C.J. Stroud.

After his outstanding rookie campaign, the quarterback followed it up with two less dominant seasons, giving Houston more reason to evaluate his long-term trajectory.

For now, the Texans still hold leverage and time on their side, with Stroud already under team control through the 2027 season.

Still, Stroud has insisted that football is his only priority and has left contract negotiations to his agency.
