Brock Wright's future with the Detroit Lions appears to be uncertain as the team continues to shape its roster. With Sam LaPorta's role firmly established, the situation hints toward a potential change.

With all the speculation of Sam LaPorta’s release as a free agent coming under uncertainty, the future of tight end Brock Wright is not so bright. The Detroit Lions’ll likely release him.

With the recent signing of Tyler Conklin from the Los Angeles Chargers and the return of Sam LaPorta from his back injuries, it has dropped Wright to the TE3 option for the Lions. 

Brock Wright was selected by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent (UDFA) in 2021 from Notre Dame. He played for five seasons with the Lions and scored 2 touchdowns in 11 games last season.

With LaPorta out for the first half of the season due to injury, Wright got more play time as a TE2 in the depth chart. But he was not able to convert the opportunities into success.

Being a replacement, 14 catches for 108 yards show limited offensive impact despite increased opportunity. This made the Motown leadership look for options. 

This is where the 31-year-old Tyler Conklin comes into play. 

The only tight end with the Lions who has the pass-catching ability. Making him the contender for a spot in the Lions’ depth chart. With LaPorta locked in as TE1 and Conklin filling the secondary role, Wright’s path to meaningful snaps has narrowed significantly.

Where Brock Wright Stands Compared To Sam LaPorta And Tyler Conklin

When lining them up, the hierarchy in the Detroit Lions tight end room becomes clear. 

TE 1 Sam LaPorta is still the focal point. Even in just 9 games last season, he put up 489 yards with 3 touchdowns and carried an 82 PFF grade. 

Known for his versatility and ability to impact both the passing game and overall offensive flow, Laporta acts as the cornerstone of the Lions. 

Then comes Tyler Conklin, who brings stability. In 13 games, he recorded 101 yards last season, but his value goes beyond stats. 

He’s known for reliability, staying available, handling blocking duties, and doing the small things right. And more importantly, his pass-catching ability. 

That leaves Brock Wright. 

His 14 receptions for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns came with opportunity, especially when LaPorta was out. But compared to LaPorta’s efficiency and Conklin’s all-around reliability, Wright falls into a narrower role.
