There’s a massive shakeup happening right inside the NFC North. The Minnesota Vikings are officially making a play for Detroit Lions Assistant General Manager Ray Agnew. This could be bad news for the Lions.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, along with Jeremy Fowler, both actually played a role in reporting this massive front-office move to the fanbases of both teams. But it was Tom Pelissero of NFL Network who officially dropped the expanded interview list on X.

"The Minnesota Vikings requested an interview with Detroit Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew, per @TomPelissero," Cruch Time Sports' X post read.

Former General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's time at the Minnesota Vikings wasn't the best, though they did reach the playoffs on a couple of occasions.

The GM spent four seasons leading the Vikings’ front office after being hired in January 2022 on an initial four-year deal. Despite posting a strong 43-25 regular-season record and earning a contract extension in 2025, his tenure came to an end in January 2026.

On the flip side, Detroit has finished the division at the top twice in about the same time. Since coming over in 2021, Agnew has been Brad Holmes's right-hand man. They completely rebuilt the Lions from the ground up, finishing top of the division in the 2023 season.

In 2024, they turned into an unstoppable force with a 15-2 record, seeded No. 1.

But the last season didn't go to plan as the team from Detroit finished dead last in the NFC North division despite a winning record.

Could Ray Agnew Leave The Detroit Lions?

You really can't ignore the massive impact Agnew has had in Motown. His eye for pro talent helped the Lions secure back-to-back NFC North titles.

He brought that winning Super Bowl mindset from his playing days straight into Detroit's everyday locker room culture.

The Vikings have already begun their first round of virtual interviews for their General Manager opening, with reports suggesting the franchise plans to take a patient and methodical approach during the hiring process.

Formal in-person interviews are now expected to take place toward the end of May, following league meetings and Memorial Day week.

Meanwhile, since the opportunity would count as a promotion, the Lions cannot prevent Ray Agnew from interviewing with Minnesota.

Here is the really scary part for Detroit fans. The Vikings are a direct division rival. If Agnew actually packs up and heads to Minnesota, his success could come at the cost of a team they play twice a year.

NFL rules strictly say teams cannot block front office staff from interviewing for a primary General Manager job. So, the Lions will have to sit back and hope for the best for now.
