Anthony Lucas Earns High Praise Following Lions Draft Move

After the 2026 NFL Draft ended, the Detroit Lions stayed busy. General Manager Brad Holmes signed Anthony Lucas, a young defensive player from USC, as an undrafted free agent.

Many sports reporters believe Lucas was the best pickup the Lions made after the draft. Christian Booher from Sports Illustrated ranked him as the team's top undrafted signing.

"The Lions landed one of the consensus highest-rated undrafted free agents in Lucas. He never quite lived up to the high expectations he had coming out of high school as a five-star recruit, but he has athletic tools and upside that could lead to more production with development.”

Another expert, Brad Berreman of Sideline Report, noted that Lucas has the perfect body for the professional level, stating,

"The Lions should not ignore or overlook that when OTAs with the entire team get going, and during training camp. If it comes to that, with the 53-man roster a living in-season organism, the Lions should at least hope they can keep Lucas on the practice squad during his rookie season."

Lucas is a massive athlete, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 256 pounds. While he didn't put up huge stats in his final college season, his "under the hood" numbers were impressive. Experts at Pro Football Focus gave him a high pass-rushing grade of 77.1, implying he was often beating his blockers even when he didn't get a sack. He has the raw speed and strength that NFL coaches love to work with.

By joining the Lions, Lucas gets a chance to learn behind stars like Aidan Hutchinson. If he can turn his physical gifts into consistent play on the field, he could become a key part of Detroit's defense for years to come.

Analyst Feels Lucas Can Fit In Perfectly With The Lions

Anthony Lucas is a strong player who knows how to use his hands to secure sacks and disrupt the run. During his three years at USC, he played in 32 games and finished with 63 tackles and three sacks.

Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report believes Lucas has a real chance to succeed in Detroit.

“Lucas is a power-rusher with violent hands who brings versatility to the table. He can eventually carve out a role in the rotation. The 6’5½”, 256-pound pass-rusher has the physical makeup and skill set needed to fit right into Detroit’s defensive system.”

Detroit is the perfect place for Lucas to grow. They are taking a chance on Lucas because of his high ceiling and natural athletic ability. While he might not play a major role during the 2026 season, the team views him as a long-term project.

With the right coaching and a positive team environment, Lucas has the potential to develop into a valuable player for the defense in the future.
