Andy Reid Drops Bold Take On Ex-Chiefs Star's Future With Detroit Lions

After falling short last year, the Detroit Lions are approaching the upcoming season with a new strategy. While Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has shown strong belief in their direction, the pressure is only increasing for the team.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell overhauled his staff after a frustrating 9-8 finish last year. The recent arrival of former New York Giants interim coach Mike Kafka as passing game coordinator sparked high expectations, especially from Andy Reid.

“I picked him up out of Northwestern there," said Reid during the media conference at the NFL owners' meetings."I think the world of him. He’s a brilliant kid, not a kid anymore, a brilliant guy. Got a great football mind. He’s gonna do good.  He’ll be good for the Lions, yeah.”

Mike Kafka’s ties with Andy Reid date back to 2010, when he entered the league as a QB with the Philadelphia Eagles. He returned to the Chiefs in 2017 as an offensive quality control coach and quickly rose to quarterbacks coach in 2018. Kafka helped develop Patrick Mahomes during his 5,097-yard, 50-touchdown MVP season that led to a Super Bowl LIV win.

In 2020, Kafka got promoted again as passing game coordinator while keeping his QB coach responsibilities.  His skill and game IQ have earned him promotions as well as respect in Reid's eyes.

Much like his time under Andy Reid, Mike Kafka now brings a detail-oriented approach to Detroit after his January arrival. The Lions made the move after parting ways with former offensive coordinator John Morton, with Kafka adding fresh schemes to a team pushing for a playoff run.

Even with high praise from the iconic HC for their new addition, growing doubts about the Lions refuse to fade away

What’s Really Raising Concerns Inside the Detroit Lions Ahead of 2026

The Detroit Lions front office made smart, targeted moves this offseason to strengthen an already strong roster, including Isiah Pacheco and center Cade Mays.

But the biggest concern isn’t the roster. It is whether the coaching staff can truly maximize this level of talent.

In the words of Senior NFL writer Mike Sando in The Athletic

“The biggest questions with Detroit remain on the coaching staff,” another exec said. “Let’s see what Petzing and Kafka are able to infuse in terms of better ideas, better execution, more creative play calling or whatever.” Sando said.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently finished a brutal, top-to-bottom evaluation of the entire operation. The staff must fix glaring mistakes without stripping away their gritty identity. They missed the postseason last year by one single play.

If Kafka and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing can actually infuse better execution, the Lions will be able to give a dangerous competition this upcoming season.

What do you think, will the Lions be able to make adjustments and be able perform well as compared to their last season? Let us know!
