The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers will be battling for NFC North supremacy next season. This has prompted the debate between Jared Goff and Jordan Love to resurface yet again. This time, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ legacy was also brought into the conversation.

Detroit Lions reporter Mike Payton and Green Bay Packers reporter Wendell Ferreira, from AtoZ Sports, offered their views on which quarterback gives their team the better chance of winning.  During his argument, Payton mentioned how the Packers fans’ desire to relive their times with legendary quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers has affected how Love is viewed.

“I think Love gets so much love (pun intended) because he has that Green Bay Packers logo on his helmet. Everybody wants him to be the next Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre,” wrote Payton. “They want to continue that lineage. But wanting it doesn’t make it true. The numbers say Goff is the better quarterback when it matters most, and EPA alone isn’t going to change that.”

Payton also argued that Goff has been overlooked because of factors that were out of his control. He also mentioned how, due to Detroit’s offensive scheme, Goff was not able to have many deep passing opportunities, while also adding that Goff was exposed to more pressure than Love over the last three seasons. 

“Goff has played more games against winning opponents, and he’s performed better in them,” wrote Payton.

Love has thrown for 5,525 yards, 40 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, a 65% pass completion percentage, and a passer rating of 98 against winning teams. Meanwhile, Goff has posted 7,413 yards, 48 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, 68.8% pass completion percentage, and a passer rating of 99.8.

Even though Love's talent goes in the backseat in the light of Rodgers legacy, Ferreira highlighted the advanced metrics. Love finished ahead of Goff in completion percentage over expectation last season, ranking third to Goff's 12th.

As the debate continues, the Lions’ quarterback coach has marked out his expectations for Goff for next season.

The Lions’ quarterback coach, Mark Brunell, joined the team with head coach Dan Campbell in 2021. While talking to reporters during veteran minicamp, Brunell laid out what he expected from their star quarterback.

“Staying consistent and staying at the top of his game,” Brunell told the reporters, as posted by the Lions YouTube channel on June 17. “He’s smart and has been in this system, and he’s very accurate. And we expect him to play at a high level, and he will.”

Despite inconsistent offensive playcalling and a weaker offensive line, Goff’s output did not falter. He finished with the second-most passing yards of any quarterback with 4,564 while also throwing for 34 touchdowns with a pass completion rate of 68%. He also finished third in passer rating with 105.5, and sixth for yards per attempt with 7.9.

With an improved offensive line, expectations are high for Goff to help lead the Lions back to the playoffs.
